work-related-stress

This can take many forms and be caused by:

  •  Tension-fuelled relationships with others
  •  Heavy workload
  •  Lack of support from colleagues, management and loved ones
  •  Being underpaid
  •  Job instability
  •  Poor work-life balance

Symptoms

For some, this stress can be a driver to help focus or develop more efficient ways of working, whilst for others, these stresses can affect their health. When there’s no improvement or things get worse, we can be left feeling overwhelmed and the pressure can start to take its toll on our physical and mental wellbeing, and we experience the effects of stress such as:

  • Headaches
  • Moodiness
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Poor eating habits, leading to weight gain and other physical health problems
  • Depression
  • Panic attacks
  • Feeling anxious, irritable or on edge
  • Muscle tension
  • Clenched jaw
  • Upset stomach
  • More dependence on our crutch such as alcohol, smoking, sex, socialising to cope and distract ourselves
  • Brain fog
  • Constant worry and being unable to switch off
  • Low self-esteem
  • Lack of concentration

Our Treatment Approach

There are two ways to deal with stress from the workplace. The first is to make changes to the situation and the second is to change the way you deal with situations by increasing your resilience.  If your reaction to stress is much more severe, your doctor may put you on a leave of absence to give you space and time to rest and work on your mental and physical health. In addition to this, if there are any treatable symptoms, you may be prescribed a range of medication.

We suggest:-

  • Talking therapies
  • Medication
  • Reasonable adjustments to the workplace

How we can help you

We can help you change your own reaction to stress by suggesting a range of both medical treatments and talking therapies such as cognitive behavioural therapy for mild bouts of stress. This can be useful to help understand our own thoughts and behaviours contributing to our stress and help to lift our mood by changing the cycle of negative thinking.
